Cover Story

The Redlion Gazette is the first NFT weekly publication. Each week, we document all the NFT news and global historic events, which we then curate into interesting and educative articles and content.

The covers are all depictions of the news of that week filtered through the lens of many styles of art.

What is ArtDrop?

The ArtDrops are exclusive NFT art commissions that are available for free to ONLY the Redlion Gazette tokens owners of that week. The aim is to highlight good artistic work and ultimately to aspire artists to want to be featured on the ArtDrop.

Week 18 2022 Review

Issue #86 dropped on Sunday 8th May with a cover dedicated to the late, great Jean-Michel Basquiat.

We decided early on in the week that this cover would make a statement against toxic positivity, which is a big problem in the NFT space (mainly due to influencers and fake positivity gurus). The cover was a labour of love for Amal, who’s a big fan of Basquiat. He combed through the artist’s work and drew up a mental list of recurring motifs: crowns, body/face shapes, teeth, empty spaces and the typographic style.

Of course, the cover had to be relevant to the world of crypto. You’ll find positivity policeman Gary Vee gleefully pissing on anybody daring to complain. Imagery including a man wearing a crown of pain, scribbled notes, rolling eyes, jittery sketches and the final explosion convey the fraught emotions we were trying to capture. This is a striking and anarchic cover with a soundscape to match.

Gary Vee put in an unwelcome appearance in Gazette, where we explored the dark secrets behind a massive rug pull. Our interview with Carlini8 (veteran degen and OG) covered everything from the importance of community to the future of Web3. We even got the warnings in early about a 2025 solar superstorm with the potential to crash crypto. Of course, we also explored the many harmful effects of toxic positivity.

Doctor-G was the artist behind this week’s ArtDrop. ‘CreAction’ shows a sci-fi style humanoid made solely of energy who might one day become human.
