Issue #102 was released on Sunday 28th August, with the long awaited Ethereum Merge drawing ever closer.
Amongst all the Merge buzz, one question was on the minds of many - what would happen to the $18 billion mining business when ETH switched to PoS? This cover was told from the perspective of an only child, the daughter of a miner who goes to work only for the mine to explode. The destitute child attends her father’s funeral, weeping at his graveside.
This was, of course, designed to reflect the fate of out-of-work ETH miners. We opted for a childlike style after grinding away for so long with Twitter graphics and PFPs. Still, this cover took a lot of work and there are many details (look for subtle references like the Merge block and the test net names on the pencils) for the astute viewer.
Blending the objects with their environment presented a challenge, but the real hurdle came with the rendering. AE rendering crashed for Amal and it took Dudly a long time to get the renders working on his system! The result is a uniquely sorrowful scene, with a tearful piano soundtrack to accompany it.
Gazette explored the possible fates of the miners in more detail, Pudgy Penguin’s topsy-turvy trajectory towards success and shone a light on an Italian artist claiming to be Pak.
This issue’s AirDrop was the commemorative ‘Dalma’s Dream’ by 3a5a1a Basaia. It celebrates the moment when Maradona’s daughter Dalma decorated her socks with daisies.
