Cover Story

NYC: Vampire Chronicles

This week we all witnessed the second NFT NYC event, which was clearly, the highlight of the week… or was it? Of course, it couldn't hold a candle to the fuss created by Ryder Ripps about BAYC and their hidden agenda!

The first idea on the table was to feature a vampire attack starring Ryder Ripps and an unsuspecting BAYC ape going home from the NFT NYC event. This further developed after Dudly suggested that we bring the comic trait back as we had only done one before for Gazette 31.

The next step was completed when Dudly drew out the storyboard for the comic page. The scene was: a BAYC ape on his way back from the event gets ambushed by Ryder Vampire. Instantly Ryder starts to suck out the life juice out of the ape. The final scene that we see is an angry mob surrounding the crime scene that’s now being inspected by a detective from the Opensea squad.

After the scenes were cut out, we decided on the mood to be like that of Gotham city. Gotham city is considered to be just a minute before midnight on the coldest winter night in New York City. I set out to get some references and found a great trove of extremely well-done comic panels by brilliant artists. The vampire scenes were inspired by Batman comics and Morbius comics– the concoction of DC & Marvel (forgive me, Lord for I have sinned). The most challenging panel was the last one where we had to re-arrange the elements in order to make it more appealing and staged well.

Though we were thinking to keep minimal animation, owing to the extra time we had at hand we were able to churn out some frame-by-frame animations for each panel. But the most dope-est animation is the parallax effect you see in panel 5, which really sets the crime-scene mood. References from the articles are mostly seen in panels 2 and 5: “Unfollow Your Idols”, Bill Gates Optical, Burnberry, eBay Origin sale, and Joyworld toy store.

It was really an interesting style to take on as I’ve always had an interest in making comics. Wondering what the next comic-style cover will look like! Until then we are gonna keep bringing you fire cover artworks! See y’all next week frens!
